Updating Your Volca Kick with Authorized Firmware

If you ever wondered why certain things with your Volca were jacked up, don’t worry, the engineers at Korg, Inc. hear your pains.

They release firmware updates to address some of the most annoying issues in our equipment.

Just as recent as April 21st, 2017, we users of the Volca Kick were given a fix for these issues with the synth;

  • Fixed a problem where SWING +/- were inverted.
  • Fixed a problem where the PULSE sound was not being played.
  • And some other minor bug fixes.

Next I will tell you exactly how to perform your update w/o completing trashing your Volca Kick.

What you will need

You will need the following to perform your update.

  • An audio player or personal computer capable of audio playback
  • A stereo mini-jack audio cable
  • An AC adapter KA-350 or sixAA batteries
NOTE: Make sure your batteries are brand new. If you are using alkaline batteries be sure that they are fully charged, and if you have NiMH batteries make sure the are charge completely as well. The Volca Kick will not enter update mode if the batteries are drained.

Now click this link, and download your .zip file from the Korg.com webpage.

  1. Unzip the file “volca kick_updater_0102.zip”.

If you are using an audio player, transfer the file “volca kick_sys_0102.wav from your computer to your audio player (iphone, android, ipod, etc.).

WARNING: Do not playback the system file on any speaker or headphone system. It could break your equipment or screw up your hearing.

 Check the current version.

  • Hold the REC button and turn the power on.

Before system version 1.02

If the current system is before version 1.02, the display will be lit “1.01” & P0.09″ Your Volca Kick is not up-to-date.

System version 1.02

If the current system is before version 1.02, the display will be lit “1.02” & P0.09″ Your Volca Kick is not up-to-date.

Connect the audio output of your playback device to the SYNC IN connector on your VOLCA KICK.

Power down the Volca Kick. Leave all connections in place.

Hold down the FUNC & PLAY button on the Volca Kick, and Turn the power on.

“UPdt” will be displayed to show your Volca Kick has entered update mode.

Start playback of the “volca kick_sys_0102.wav” to begin updating.

Note: Make sure the playback device has been turned up.
Note: STEP LEDs 1-16 will indicate the update progress.
  1. Warning: Make sure the update file is played from the beginning
  2. When using a computer, ANY OTHER SYSTEMS SOUNDS (e.g. notifications) will cause the update to FAIL. Make sure ALL other applications are shut down and DO NOT operate your computer during the update.
  3. The update will take about 30 seconds. Do not turn your Volca Kick off or stop the playback while the update is in progress.
  4. If the update fails, the knobs will start blinking. If this happens, observe “Tips” section at the end of this post and repeat from step “Hold down the FUNC & PLAY button on the Volca Kick, and Turn the power on.”

When the update has been successfully completed, “End” will be displayed. Now, turn the power off.

Double-check the firmware by hold the REC button and pressing the power button. If the display reads “1.02” and “P0.09”. You successfully completed the update. Power off and rock on!

TIPS

  1. update may fail with some audio players, computers or software. If this is the case, please try with a different device.
  2. If you are having trouble with the update, please check the following.
  • Check the current firmware version. If it has already been updated, you will not be able to update again (it will also be unnecessary).
  • Make sure the volume on the playback device has been turned up. (Please not that some devices which have very high output that can distort the sound may fail. If this is the case please try turning the volume down and start the process again.
  • Make sure all functions that affect the playback sound, such as crossfade & EQ, are disabled.
  • Make sure the update file is played from the beginning.
  • Check the connection from your playback device to your Volca Kick.
  • When using a computer, any other system sounds (e.g. push notifications) will cause the update to fail. Make sure all other applications are shut down and do not operate your computer during the update.

Lastly, bad auxiliary cables (aux cables) will result in frustration. Make sure you have a good cable. Preview a “playable” sound recording (e.g. music, voice recording, ebook) with your cable to ensure the sound quality coming through the cable is good. Do not preview the update file, it could cause damage to your equipment and possibly result in hearing loss/damage.

I hope this helps. remember to check in at your manufacturers webpage to see with other equipment has a firmware update.
